KZN Traditional Leader Arrested for Alleged Rape of Teenager

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa – A 54-year-old traditional leader from the KwaBhidla area has been arrested for the alleged rape of a teenage girl. The suspect, who cannot be named until his bail hearing, is expected to appear in the Hlanganani Magistrates Court on 12 May 2025.

Details of the Alleged Crime

According to police reports, the incident occurred on 4 May 2025 after the accused offered the victim a ride from eGqumeni. Instead of taking her to her destination, he allegedly drove her to a remote location and assaulted her.

Police Minister Condemns the Attack

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu strongly denounced the incident, calling it a “betrayal of societal trust.”

“This act is vile and contradicts the moral responsibility expected of traditional leaders. We commend SAPS for their swift action.”

The suspect was remanded in custody after a brief court appearance on 9 May 2025 and will face a formal bail application soon.
