He Faked a Business Trip to Test the New Nanny

Richard Hales had built a career on control. In business, that quality made him successful. At home, after the death of his wife, it slowly turned his Westchester house into something cold, quiet, and almost untouched by life.
So when he told his office he was leaving for a three-day leadership summit in Chicago, everyone believed him. His assistant saw the packed carry-on. His driver pulled the SUV to the front. His twin sons received quick kisses in the nursery. Everything looked exactly like the departure of a wealthy executive with a full calendar.
But Richard never went to the airport.
Less than an hour later, he had the driver stop near a row of trees, told him to wait for a call, and walked back toward his own home. He was not returning as a father. He was returning like an investigator.
