The Stray Dog Who Wouldn’t Let the Driver Leave

The rain had turned the loading dock into a sheet of black glass by the time Eli Brennan reached his final stop. He was behind schedule, exhausted after a long shift, and under pressure from dispatch to clear the bay before midnight. Then a soaked stray dog stepped into his path and refused to move.
At first, Eli thought the animal was looking for food or shelter. The dog was thin, muddy, and dripping wet beneath the dock lights. But he wasn’t focused on Eli. His eyes were fixed on the back of the delivery truck.
When Eli tried to open the trailer and finish unloading, the dog barked sharply, jumped onto the bumper, and forced his way inside. He ignored every command to get down. Instead, he moved through the cargo with frantic purpose, nose sweeping along the floor until he stopped at a small cardboard box tucked behind a larger pallet.
The package looked ordinary. It was taped, labeled, and light enough to seem empty. But when Eli picked it up, he heard the faintest movement inside.
