Red Sea Underwater Excursion Incident: Investigation Reveals Critical Safety Failures

A vacation underwater excursion near the popular Egyptian resort destination of Hurghada ended in disaster on March 27, resulting in six fatalities and multiple injuries. According to preliminary investigation findings reported by international media outlets, the incident occurred when an underwater viewing vessel carrying 45 international tourists lost stability and collided with a coral formation, causing the craft to overturn and lose pressure integrity.
The majority of the casualties were international travelers staying at a beachfront resort property in the area. The group had arranged the underwater sightseeing experience through an established travel company, with plans that included transportation from their accommodation to the marina followed by a guided underwater journey to approximately 22 meters below the surface.
Survivor accounts published by international news sources indicate that the vessel allegedly began its descent before properly securing all entry points. As water began entering the cabin, passengers were reportedly forced to evacuate without organized assistance.

One survivor, identified as Elena Boldareva, recounted how she and her husband successfully escaped from the tourist underwater vessel as it descended at the boarding platform. “Some individuals were able to evacuate, while others were unfortunately unable to exit,” she stated.
Her family members were among the 39 individuals rescued and transported to medical facilities. Reports indicate at least one child remains in critical condition. According to witness statements, passengers attempted self-rescue while visitors on adjacent watercraft at the marina of a nearby resort property rushed to assist people struggling in the water.
The incident has prompted calls for enhanced safety protocols for underwater tourism experiences, with travel safety experts emphasizing the importance of proper pre-dive safety checks and emergency preparedness training for crew members operating such specialized excursion vessels.
Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into maintenance records, crew certification, and operational procedures to determine the full sequence of events that led to this underwater tourism tragedy.
