Stepmother Took Her Room, Then Found the Box Under the Bed

Emily had always believed her bedroom was the one place in the house no one could take from her. It held the last pieces of her mother, the memories she protected, and the small sense of safety she still had left. Then her stepmother stood at the top of the stairs with Emily’s clothes in her hands and gave her twelve hours to disappear.
Vanessa, her stepmother, did not raise her voice at first. She did not need to. Her message was clear as she dropped Emily’s belongings over the railing and treated the teenager’s favorite sweater like it was trash.
At seventeen, Emily had lived in that home since she was five. She knew every familiar sound in it: the stair that creaked, the cabinet that stuck when the weather was damp, the way afternoon light moved across her bedroom wall. But that evening, the house no longer felt like home.
Her suitcase was open on the floor. Jeans, books, papers, and shoes were scattered through the entryway. Vanessa was already measuring Emily’s room, preparing to give it to her fifteen-year-old daughter, Madison.
