Community in Mourning After Teacher Kenosi Mashishi Is Killed by Lightning in North West

The Moretele Local Municipality in the North West Province has been plunged into deep mourning following the tragic death of 35-year-old Kenosi Mashishi, who was struck and killed by lightning while attending a cultural event. The devastating incident occurred on Saturday, 3 January 2026, at the Mphebatho Sports Ground in Dertig during a troupes festival that had drawn large numbers of community members.

Kenosi, a resident of Lefatlheng, was a respected and dedicated teacher at a local primary school in Dertig. She was described by family, colleagues and community members as a kind-hearted, hardworking woman who was passionate about education and deeply involved in community activities. Her sudden passing has left a painful void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.

According to her family, Kenosi had been looking forward to a new chapter in her life. She had recently completed building her dream home, valued at nearly R600 000, and was scheduled to move in during February 2026. Tragically, she passed away just one month before she could enjoy the fruits of her hard work. Her brother, Tshepo Mashishi, said the family is heartbroken that she never had the chance to live in the house she worked so hard to build.

Adding to the family’s grief, Kenosi had purchased a brand-new Toyota Starlet XS just four days before her death. The vehicle remains unused, serving as a painful reminder of a life cut short far too soon. Relatives say they are still struggling to come to terms with how quickly everything changed.

Family members shared that Kenosi was a regular attendee of the annual troupes festival and rarely missed the event. Her aunt, Musa Baloyi, said Kenosi loved spending time with family, especially during the festive season, when they often travelled together to shopping malls outside their area. “She enjoyed life and valued family time. Losing her has left us shattered,” she said.

Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes as lightning struck twice during the event. Kenosi’s cousin, Nkele Mokotedi, recalled that after the second strike, there was a loud sound and people inside the tent collapsed. “I couldn’t move my feet and struggled to stand. It was extremely traumatising,” she said.

Community leader Zebra Motshegwa expressed deep sorrow, describing Kenosi as a “darling of the community” whose death has affected many. Moretele Municipality spokesperson Mothupi Malebye confirmed that Mayor George Manyike paid tribute to the two families who lost loved ones in the incident.

North West police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sam Tselanyane confirmed that two inquests have been opened after two women, aged 28 and 35, were declared dead at a local clinic. He added that while initial reports suggested about 40 people were struck by lightning, investigations are ongoing to confirm the total number of injured.

Government spokesperson Nomonde Mnukwa extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery, as the community continues to grieve this tragic loss.
