DJ Poizens Final Symphony: A Community’s Farewell to Caven Masetla

The vibrant rhythms that once pulsed from Tickeyline, Tzaneen, lulled into solemness on Saturday, as family, friends, and fans gathered to lay DJ Poizen—born Caven Masetla—to rest at Napscom Hall. At 35, the rising star whose mixes united generations tragically lost his life in a car accident on 30 August 2025, a catastrophe that also claimed the lives of four passengers.

A Funeral Unlike Any Other

Rather than the quiet hush often associated with farewells, Poizen’s funeral was a celebration of his spirit. Deep house beats mixed with hymns, reminding mourners not just of loss, but of the joy he brought into every room. One friend reflected on Poizen’s youthful curiosity—turning rulers or dusters into drumsticks in class—and his love for Michael Jackson. Even at a young age, music pulsed in him.

The Man Beyond the Music

“I’m talking about Caven, not DJ Poizen,” remarked Sarah Makgoba, a neighbour who spoke of his grounded upbringing under the care of his grandmother. Despite his growing fame, he carried humility like a second skin—laughing, teaching, encouraging. At one point, he urged her to take up DJing.

Childhood friends painted him as a source of light in hard times. Masilo remembered that even though life was not easy, Poizen’s energy softened the edges. “He even taught me how to drive,” Masilo said. His brother, Blondie Masetla, shared memories of sleepless nights when Poizen’s beats filled the air, unaware that one day those sounds would define a legacy.

A Music Legacy Cut Short

DJ Chymamusique, who was travelling with Poizen, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries; he has since been transferred out of ICU. Poizen’s impact, however, stretched far beyond tragedy. Veterans of the music industry, like Edgar Modiba, honoured him as a “true soldier.” Across radio waves, his influence persists: “His music will live on through our airwaves,” said Master Jay of Capricorn FM.

Outside of music, Poizen had a life in IT and had just passed an important exam—getting ready to enter a new chapter. Colleagues saw a man who balanced beats with codes and dreams with discipline.

A Final Word

At the memorial in Tshwane’s Centurion Shisanyama earlier in the week, and now at Napscom Hall, the gathering was the same: grief interwoven with gratitude. For the laughter, the humility, the music—it was a communal heartbeat that refused to stop, even when the DJ did.

DJ Poizen is gone, but the echoes of his kindness, creativity, and beats remain in every lesson taught, song spun, and life he touched.
