FIFA Makes Key Decision on Congo-Brazzaville’s 2026 World Cup Participation

FIFA Lifts Congo-Brazzaville Suspension, Clears Path for World Cup Qualifiers Return

Congo-Brazzaville’s national football team has been reinstated for 2026 World Cup qualifying after FIFA lifted its three-month suspension on May 14, 2025. The global football governing body confirmed the decision following Congo’s compliance with governance requirements.

Resolution of Governance Dispute
The suspension, imposed in February 2025, resulted from third-party interference in the Congolese Football Association (FECOFOOT). FIFA’s strict statutes mandate complete independence for member associations. Key to the resolution was restoring full control of FECOFOOT facilities – including the Ignié Technical Centre – to president Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas’ executive committee.

Uphill Qualification Battle
Despite the reprieve, Congo faces significant challenges:
• Currently bottom of Group E with 0 points
• Four remaining matches (September-October 2025)
• Must reschedule postponed fixtures against Tanzania and Zambia

FIFA’s Firm Stance on Governance
The decision underscores FIFA’s commitment to federation autonomy. Similar warnings were issued to Zambia earlier this year when government officials attempted to influence FAZ elections. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana have risen in FIFA rankings after strong qualifying performances.

Road to North America 2026
With the expanded 48-team format, Africa will have nine direct qualification spots plus one intercontinental playoff berth. Congo’s reinstatement keeps their mathematical chances alive as CAF qualification enters its decisive phase.

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, marking the first 48-team edition of football’s premier tournament.
