First Responder Tragedy: Community Mourns Young Paramedic Lost in Line of Duty

The Kansas City community is in shock following the tragic loss of a dedicated first responder who made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his life-saving duties. Firefighter Paramedic Graham Hoffman, just 29 years old, lost his life after being attacked during what began as a standard emergency medical response on April 27, 2025.
The incident occurred while Hoffman was transporting a patient to receive medical care at a local healthcare facility. Despite being rushed to North Kansas City Hospital and receiving emergency surgical intervention, the young paramedic succumbed to critical injuries sustained during the attack.
Hoffman, who joined the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) in 2022, was recognized throughout the department and community for his extraordinary commitment to public service and compassionate care for those in emergency situations.
Mayor Quinton Lucas voiced the community’s collective grief: “I am heartbroken. Kansas City has lost a true public servant. We will pursue justice and support his loved ones.”
Law enforcement has apprehended a suspect identified as Shanetta Bossell, who now faces serious criminal charges including first-degree murder and assault against a public safety officer.
The fire department shared a poignant memorial image of Hoffman, describing their fallen colleague as “compassionate, loving, and a leader.” Close friend Kaydrie Groenke honored his memory with a collection of cherished moments, noting that “He brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable energy to our lives.”
In the wake of this tragedy, community members are advocating for enhanced safety measures to protect emergency medical personnel who risk their lives daily. City officials continue to honor Hoffman’s legacy as funeral arrangements are being prepared.
The community extends heartfelt condolences to Hoffman’s family, friends, and his extended family at KCFD during this difficult time.
