Nomzamo Mbatha Launches R20 Million Literacy Campaign to Transform SA Education
Actress and humanitarian Nomzamo Mbatha is taking bold action to address South Africa’s literacy crisis through her Lighthouse Foundation, partnering with the Cotton On Foundation to launch Beyond Words—a R20 million campaign to empower under-resourced schools.

Why This Matters
- Alarming Stats: 81% of Grade 4 learners can’t read for meaning, and 78% of public schools lack libraries.
- Holistic Solution: The campaign will build libraries, train educators, provide reading software, and supply books to unlock learners’ potential.
- Nomzamo’s Vision: “Literacy is the key to a fulfilled life. We’re helping children dream beyond their circumstances,” she said.
Sustainable Impact
Acanda Jaswa (Cotton On Foundation SA) emphasized long-term change: “This isn’t a quick fix—we’re investing in measurable, generational progress.”
Partner The Bookery (already supporting 98 schools) will expand its reach with 375,000+ donated books.

How to Help (16 June – 18 July)
- Donate directly or purchase Cotton On Foundation products (totes, water, wipes) in-store or online.
- Every contribution fuels libraries, teacher training, and tools for thousands of learners.
