“This way,” Veronica directed briskly.
Lucas, the child I would be caring for, stood quietly by the staircase, holding a book.
“Hello,” he murmured softly, barely looking up when prompted to greet me.
“Lucas isn’t particularly talkative,” Veronica explained dismissively.
She proceeded to outline the household rules and expectations for my role.
“One final important matter,” she added, stopping abruptly. “The third floor is strictly off-limits. That’s where Lucas’s grandmother resides. She highly values her privacy.”
I acknowledged this rule with a nod, though her stern tone left me feeling somewhat uneasy.
