Floyd Shivambu removed as MK Party secretary-general after Malawi trip fallout

MK Party Removes Floyd Shivambu as Secretary-General Following Unsanctioned Malawi Trip

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced the removal of Floyd Shivambu from his position as secretary-general after his controversial visit to Malawi, where he met with self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri. The trip, which was not authorized by the party, prompted urgent discussions among senior leadership, including party president Jacob Zuma.

In an official statement, MK Party deputy chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko confirmed the decision, stating that Shivambu’s actions violated party regulations. “After lengthy deliberations, it was concluded that the secretary-general’s conduct conflicted with the party’s constitution and principles,” Nhleko said. The party highlighted that the unsanctioned engagement breached internal rules prohibiting foreign activities that undermine the MK Party’s objectives.

The timing of Shivambu’s trip further fueled criticism, as it coincided with a Malawian court ruling on Bushiri’s potential extradition to South Africa, where he faces serious charges after skipping bail. The MK Party expressed concerns over reputational risks, with Nhleko emphasizing, “Given the gravity of this matter, swift action was necessary to uphold the party’s integrity.”

Despite his removal as secretary-general, Shivambu will remain within the party structures, transitioning to a parliamentary role. Nhleko noted that his experience as a former MP would bolster the MK Party’s presence in the National Assembly, where it now serves as the official opposition.

Shivambu publicly accepted the decision, affirming his commitment to the party. “As a disciplined member, I fully respect the leadership’s resolution,” he stated. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue advancing the MK Party’s agenda in Parliament.”

The move underscores the party’s efforts to enforce internal discipline while navigating its growing political influence.
