How One Traffic Stop Exposed a Pattern of Law Enforcement Misconduct

In broad daylight at approximately 4 PM, I pulled into a Shell service station at the intersection of 8th and Green when I noticed police lights flashing behind me. I was confident in my driving—no speeding violations, proper signaling, and complete adherence to traffic regulations. As the patrol vehicle positioned itself behind my car, effectively blocking my exit, I assumed there might be an issue with my vehicle’s lights or registration.

The Unexpected Encounter

Following recommended guidelines for traffic stops, I remained composed, lowered my window, and waited for the officer to approach. He appeared to be in his late thirties, wearing typical aviator sunglasses and sporting a military-style haircut. His body language conveyed a certain arrogance that suggested boredom rather than professional concern. His identification badge displayed “R. Hanley.”

“License and registration,” he requested without making proper eye contact.

I complied immediately, handing over my documentation without comment. He returned to his vehicle with my identification.

A Concerning Development

After an unusually long wait of approximately ten minutes, I observed him through my mirror. Rather than processing my information through official channels, he appeared to be casually browsing his personal device—not typing or communicating with dispatch, just scrolling.

An unsettling feeling began to develop as he finally returned to my window, leaning uncomfortably close into my personal space.

“You look real familiar,” he remarked with an inappropriate smirk. “You got Insta?”

Confused by this unprofessional question, I responded, “Excuse me?”

He held my license between his fingers in a deliberately casual manner. “Instagram. You on there? What’s your handle?”

The implied threat in his tone left me momentarily speechless.

He positioned himself to appear more intimidating. “I’ll give this back if you type it in. Right now.”

Documentation of Misconduct

With trembling hands, I reached toward my bag. Unknown to the officer, my vehicle was equipped with a discreet dashboard camera installed beneath the rearview mirror—a security measure I had implemented the previous year. An emergency recording button was concealed beneath the steering column, designed to save and highlight the previous ten minutes of footage.

I activated this feature as he continued his inappropriate behavior.

“Come on,” he persisted, “I can make things annoying for you. Or easy. Up to you.”

Before I could respond, another motorist arrived at an adjacent pump. The man, wearing a casual hooded sweatshirt, immediately noticed the officer’s suspicious positioning at my window.

The officer’s demeanor transformed instantly. He stepped back, returned my documentation, and departed with a curt “Have a good day,” as if nothing inappropriate had occurred.
