Khanyo Maphumulo Reveals She Earned Less Than R10K for Sarafina!
Veteran actress and singer Khanyo Maphumulo has shared one of the most painful moments of her career—earning just R10,000 for her work on the iconic film Sarafina!, despite co-composing its legendary songs.

Maphumulo was only 14 when she auditioned for the stage version and 17 during filming. Yet, for her contributions to hits like Freedom Is Coming and The Lord’s Prayer, she says she received almost nothing.
“I was young and naïve,” she admitted, recalling how her lack of industry knowledge led to exploitation. Shockingly, she claims she never signed a contract and still fights for royalties through the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO)—with no resolution in sight.
Her story has sparked fresh outrage over the treatment of young artists in South Africa, where many veterans still struggle for fair compensation.
Despite the setback, Maphumulo’s legacy endures. In 2024, she was honored with the Iconic Impact Award at the South African Heroes Awards—a testament to her resilience and influence.
