After 28 Years, ‘Muvhango’ Prepares for Final Curtain Call This August

South African television history will mark a significant moment on August 8, 2025, as SABC 2’s landmark soapie Muvhango airs its final episode, concluding a pioneering 28-year run. The announcement was jointly made by the broadcaster and Word of Mouth Productions, honoring the show’s legacy as one of South Africa’s most enduring and culturally significant dramas.

SABC bids farewell to ‘Muvhango’

Since its April 7, 1997 premiere under creator Duma ka NdlovuMuvhango broke new ground by centering Tshivenda language and culture at a time when television heavily favored more widely spoken languages. The show’s iconic characters—including Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, and James Motsamai—became household names while its narratives blended traditional values with contemporary social issues.

A Cultural Trailblazer
Ka Ndlovu reflected on the show’s impact: “Muvhango elevated an overlooked language into national prominence. It created spaces where marginalized voices could shine.” The series earned particular praise for its educational storytelling and role in fostering national unity during South Africa’s democratic transition.

SABC’s Lala Tuku (Acting Group Executive: Video Entertainment) added: “For three decades, Muvhango has been more than entertainment—it championed cultural identity and became a touchstone for South African storytelling.”

What Comes Next?
While Muvhango‘s timeslot will reportedly be filled by new drama Pimville Queens (slated for August 11), SABC has yet to officially confirm the replacement. The finale episode is expected to pay tribute to the show’s legacy while giving closure to its beloved characters.
