My Mother-in-Law Slapped Me While I Held My Newborn—Then She Told Everyone I Had Dropped the Baby
The slap came so quickly that I never saw Patricia Miller raise her hand.
One moment, I was standing in the hallway of our Columbus, Ohio, home, rocking my three-week-old daughter, Lily.
The next, Patricia’s palm struck my face.
My ears rang.
My head turned.
And for one terrifying second, I lost my balance.

The Moment Everything Changed
Her palm caught my cheek.
My head snapped sideways.
My balance disappeared.
And Lily slipped.
She landed on the floor.
Then the crying stopped.
I dropped to my knees.
“Lily!”
She wasn’t responding.
My hands shook as I reached toward her.
I couldn’t understand how something so terrible had happened in the space of a few seconds.
Then Daniel came running from the bedroom.
“What happened?”
