My MIL Decided to Stay With a Stranger She Met at a Hotel—Then She Called Me Late That Night

My Mother-in-Law Stayed With a Stranger on Vacation—Five Days Later, She Called Me at Midnight

My mother-in-law stayed behind on vacation with a man she had known for less than a week.

Five days later, my phone rang at 12:47 a.m.

It was Valerie.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Please help me. Don’t tell my son.”

I had been married to Owen for eight years, and Valerie had always been an important part of our lives.

She was the kind of mother who called her son almost every day.

Usually, Owen didn’t mind.

He was her only child, and after his father died two years earlier, those calls became even more important.

Valerie had been married for thirty-five years. After losing her husband, she seemed to lose much of her enthusiasm for life as well.

She stopped traveling.

She turned down invitations.

Whenever friends suggested she meet someone new, she would simply smile and say, “I already had the love of my life.”

So when Owen and I planned a week at the beach, inviting Valerie seemed like the obvious thing to do.

For the first couple of days, she mostly sat by the pool with a book.

Then she met Russell.

The Man at the Hotel Bar

They met at the hotel bar on our second evening.

By the time Owen and I headed upstairs, Valerie was still sitting there, laughing with him.

Not her polite laugh.

A real one.

I hadn’t seen that expression on her face in years.

Russell was sixty-five, divorced, and had two adult children.

The next morning, Valerie appeared at breakfast wearing lipstick.

Owen stared at her.

“Why are you dressed up?”

She looked at him as if he’d asked the strangest question in the world.

“I’m not that dressed up.”

“You’re wearing lipstick.”

“I’ve worn lipstick before.”

I tried not to laugh.

Valerie smiled.

“Russell asked if I’d have breakfast with him.”

Owen leaned back in his chair.

“Russell?”

“Yes, Owen. Russell.”

Over the next few days, we barely saw her.

And honestly, I was happy for her.

She and Russell walked along the beach every morning.

They had lunch together.

One evening, they went to a seafood restaurant down the coast.

By the fourth night, Valerie returned to the hotel after ten.

Owen was waiting in the lobby.

“Mom, you barely know this man.”

Valerie stopped.

“Stop talking to me like I’m sixteen.”

“I’m not.”

“You absolutely are.”
