Televangelist Pastor Tim Omotoso Arrested on Immigration Charges

Controversial Pastor Tim Omotoso Re-Arrested on Immigration Charges After Rape Acquittal

JOHANNESBURG – Controversial televangelist Timothy Omotoso was arrested on immigration charges on 10 May 2025, just over a month after being acquitted of rape and human trafficking in a high-profile case that spanned eight years.

A Shocking Turn of Events
The Gqeberha High Court had cleared Omotoso and his two co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho, on 2 April 2025, dismissing 63 charges related to sexual assault, trafficking, and violations of the Sexual Offences Act. However, in a dramatic twist, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Home Affairs Immigration Inspectorate detained him in East London, with his court appearance scheduled for 12 May.

Why Was Omotoso Re-Arrested?
While the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) faced criticism for failing to secure a conviction in the sexual crimes case, his latest arrest stems from alleged immigration violations. Authorities have yet to disclose full details, but the move has reignited debates about justice, accountability, and possible state overreach.

Public Outcry Over Legal “Plot Twists”
South Africans expressed fury and confusion on social media, with many questioning the timing and motives behind the arrest.

@InANutshell tweeted: “Only in South Africa—cleared in court, celebrated, then arrested the next day. Our justice system runs on vibes and plot twists!”

@TakaSyo argued: “If this is about the same charges, it’s an abuse of power. Justice must be fair, no matter who’s involved.”

@EdsonRaunde fumed: “How was he even acquitted? If I were a judge, half these pastors would be in jail!”

Mixed Reactions: Celebrations vs. Condemnation
While Omotoso’s church members celebrated his initial release with street marches in the Eastern Cape, gender-based violence activists like Onele Deleki slammed the decision.

“The system keeps failing victims,” Deleki said. “Perpetrators walk free while survivors are left in the cold.”

What’s Next?
As Omotoso prepares for his next court appearance, the case continues to highlight:
✔️ Legal loopholes in high-profile prosecutions
✔️ Public distrust in South Africa’s justice system
✔️ Ongoing scrutiny of religious leaders accused of abuse
