The Adoption Adjustment When a Mother’s Doubts Nearly Changed a Family’s Future

After years of struggling with fertility challenges, David and Claire made the life-changing decision to pursue adoption. Their parenting journey led them to Sophie, a bright-eyed 4-year-old who had spent her entire life in the foster care system. From their first meeting, Sophie formed an immediate attachment, eagerly calling them “Mommy” and “Daddy” even before the adoption paperwork was finalized.

“I thought I could handle everything,” Claire explained, her voice breaking as she struggled to maintain composure. “But it’s harder than I ever imagined. Sophie… she’s not what I expected. I feel like I’m messing up every second. I don’t know how to be the mother she needs.”

David was stunned by this adoption reversal consideration. “So you’d rather send her back to a life of foster homes and uncertainty?” he asked, unable to mask his anger and disappointment.

Claire admitted her fears stemmed from feeling inadequate as a parent. “I love her… but my love isn’t enough to get rid of this fear,” she confessed.

When David reminded her that adoption had been her idea initially, Claire revealed external influences had been affecting her confidence. Her mother had been calling regularly, sharing adoption horror stories about older children with behavioral issues. A recent tantrum Sophie had at a grocery store had triggered Claire’s doubts, with her mother suggesting they should have adopted an infant or pursued additional fertility treatments instead.

“I don’t know what else to do,” Claire whispered through tears. “I feel like I’m failing her.”
