South Africans are grieving the passing of acclaimed actor Presley Chweneyagae, who died on Tuesday, 27 May, at the age of 40. Known for his unforgettable roles in TsotsiiNumber NumberThe River, and 90 Plein Street, Chweneyagae leaves behind a legacy of brilliance in film and television.

He was laid to rest on Saturday, 7 June, in an emotional funeral service attended by family, friends, and colleagues. Among those who paid tribute was his close friend MV Sgudla, who shared heartbreaking details of the actor’s final moments.

Sgudla revealed he was by Chweneyagae’s side when he took his last breath. “I have no words to say how hurt I am. I had to experience the last moment of his passing—I was with him. I was with the paramedics; I was on the scene,” he said in a speech captured by SABC.

“To see you, my friend, leaving in the manner in which you left broke my heart,” Sgudla added, mourning a bond tragically cut short.

The Chweneyagae family confirmed the actor died of natural causes, with no foul play suspected. Reports indicate paramedics were called after he experienced difficulty breathing.
